FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Therapeutic Massage can be defined as the manipulating of soft tissue structures of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm, and stress; and to promote health and wellness.
- Who can benefit from Massage?
Everyone can benefit on some level from massage therapy. Whether it is the weary professional, the executive, a strained athlete or the overwhelmed, overscheduled homemaker. Research has shown that premature infants thrive when massage is added to their care. Posture improvements can be seen in children and teens who regularly carry heavy backpacks to school. Students who engage in regular sports can maintain a competitive edge as well as reducing muscle soreness. The elderly find massage a way of relieving feelings of isolation and for help during bereavement. Massage is a pro-active choice for the care and maintenance of good health and it just feels good!
- Are there any medical conditions that make massage inadvisable?
Yes, which is why a general health history is taken prior to the session. It is very important that you inform the therapist of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you have circulatory ailments (such as phlebitis), infectious disease, certain forms of cancer, cardiac problems, certain skin conditions or any inflammed or infected tissue be sure to consult with your physician before initiating any massage program.
- Must I completely undress?
Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is up to you what you wear. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly covered with a sheet or large body towel throughout the entire session.
- What should I do during the massage?
Make yourself comfortable. Most people close their eyes, listen to the music, and relax completely; others prefer to talk. Whatever feels most natural and relaxing to you.
It is not uncommon for this to take place. The combined effects of a relaxing atmosphere, tension relief, and a change or disconnection from normal daily activities allow for this possibility. The massage will continue.
- How long is a massage session and what is the cost?
A usual session lasts approximately one hour. This allows sufficient time for a deeply relaxing full body session. Longer sessions can target specific areas of pain or discomfort with more indepth techniques. A shorter session is an excellent introduction to bodywork. Prices vary depending upon length and type of session, as well as the geographical area. See Massage Services Menu.
